What Is an Upturned Nose / Short Nose?

A nose that is short and tilted upward, with nostrils that appear excessively visible from the front, is commonly called an upturned nose.

Correcting a short nose by lengthening the nose and lowering the tip is a highly challenging rhinoplasty procedure, so it should be performed by a specialist with extensive surgical experience to achieve satisfying results.

Upturned Nose / Short Nose Candidates for Surgery

Upturned Nose / Short Nose Candidates for Surgery

  1. 01 Compared with the whole face, the nose is short
  2. 02 When viewed from the front, the nostrils are very visible
  3. 03 The nasal tip is tilted upward, giving a pig-nose look
  4. 04 As a complication of previous nose surgery, capsular contracture has lifted the nasal tip

Upturned Nose / Short Nose Surgical Methods

  • 01

    Cartilage Reshaping

Side cross-section diagram of the nose before surgery, with the alar cartilage raised so the nasal tip turns upward
    Before surgery
Side cross-section diagram of the nose after surgery, with the alar cartilage separated and lowered so the nasal tip is brought down
    After surgery

When the alar cartilages that form the nasal tip sit too high, the tip also looks lifted. In such cases, the alar cartilage is separated from the upper lateral cartilage and repositioned lower.

  • 02

    Cartilage grafting (septal extension graft)

Side cross-section diagram of the nose before surgery, with a short nasal tip that turns upward
    Before surgery
Side cross-section diagram of the nose after surgery, with cartilage placed between the septal cartilage and the alar cartilage to lengthen the nasal tip
    After surgery

If cartilage reshaping alone does not lengthen the nasal tip enough, additional septal cartilage is extended between the septal cartilage and the alar cartilage to lengthen and correct the tip.

  • 03

Cartilage grafting (ear cartilage strut graft)

Side cross-section diagram of the nose before surgery, with a short nose overall and the upper and lower nasal cartilages joined together
    Before surgery
Side cross-section diagram of the nose after surgery, with the upper and lower nasal cartilages separated and ear cartilage added to lengthen the nose
    After surgery

When the nose is short overall, the upper and lower nasal cartilages are separated, and ear cartilage is grafted in to extend the overall length of the nose.

  • 04

Cartilage reshaping + cartilage grafting + augmentation rhinoplasty

Side cross-section diagram of the nose with a low nasal bridge after cartilage reshaping and cartilage grafting only
    Before surgery
Side cross-section diagram of the nose after surgery, with the nasal bridge and tip raised together by augmentation rhinoplasty
    After surgery

If you want to raise the nasal bridge and tip after cartilage reshaping and cartilage grafting, augmentation rhinoplasty is performed.
