Full Aftercare Instructions for Eye Surgery

No Alcohol / No Smoking

  • Please do not drink alcohol or smoke for 1 month after surgery. Alcohol and smoking cause inflammation and delay wound healing.

Compresses

  • To reduce swelling quickly, applying cold compresses frequently after surgery can ease swelling and bruising. Placing an ice pack directly on the eyes carries a risk of frostbite, so please apply it over thin medical gauze (or a thin handkerchief if you have no gauze).
  • If you have had fat grafting on the upper eyelids, please do not apply cold compresses.
  • If you have had fat grafting under the eyes (fat repositioning, lower blepharoplasty), you may apply cold compresses.

Swelling

  • Swelling varies from person to person.
  • Swelling is greatest during the first 2-3 days after surgery and gradually subsides over 2-4 weeks.
  • On the day of surgery, sit upright as much as possible, avoid bending your head down or lying face down, and sleep with 2-3 pillows propped under you, which helps reduce swelling and pain. Also, do not turn your head to the side or lie on your stomach; it is best to sleep lying flat on your back.

Prescribed Medication

  • Be sure to take the medication prescribed by the clinic after surgery.
  • For up to a week after suture removal, apply eye ointment 2-3 times a day, using a cotton swab with just a small amount, enough to keep the wound from drying out. Applying too much may cause the wound to become macerated. Eye ointment is harmless if it gets into the eyes, but please apply it away from the eyes whenever possible.
  • If you have had the one-day natural adhesion procedure, please apply eye ointment for one week.
  • Painkillers such as aspirin, vitamins, red ginseng, herbal extract drinks, omega-3, propolis, and hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives may be taken one week after all treatment is complete.
  • If pain at the surgical site is severe even after taking the prescribed medication, you may take 1 additional Tylenol tablet (up to 5 tablets per day).

Suture Removal

  • Sutures are removed at 5-7 days for incisional procedures, on day 7 for epicanthoplasty / lower eyelid surgery, and between days 7-14 for combined canthoplasty / lateral canthoplasty.
  • If you have had lower eyelid surgery, the sutures and tape are removed one week after surgery. (We will explain which tapes can be removed during your treatment. Never remove any other tape.)

Face Washing

  • You may wash your face starting 2 days after suture removal.
  • Until the sutures are removed, take care not to let water get into the surgical area.
  • If you have had the one-day natural adhesion procedure, you may wash your face starting 3 days after.

Contact Lenses / Makeup

  • You may wear contact lenses starting 2 weeks after suture removal. (Do not use artificial tears too often.)
  • Skin makeup is allowed from 2 weeks after suture removal.
  • Eye makeup is allowed from 1 month after suture removal.

Exercise

  • Light walks help swelling go down faster.
  • Begin all forms of exercise, including golf, gym workouts, swimming, steam rooms, and saunas, only after 4 weeks have passed since surgery.

Eye Exercises

  • Practice often opening your eyes wide using your eye muscles rather than lifting with your forehead.
  • Massaging around the eyes is allowed from 1 month after suture removal.

Itching

  • If itching with redness and swelling appears at the surgical site within 2-3 days after surgery, it is an allergic reaction to the antibiotics, and you must stop using the prescribed ointment and medication.
  • Inflammation does not develop because you stopped the antibiotics, so if you suspect an allergic reaction, please contact the clinic and visit us.
