Full Post-Facelift Precautions

No Alcohol / No Smoking

  • To prevent infection, you must avoid alcohol and smoking for 4 weeks.

Compresses

  • To bring down the swelling quickly, apply cold compresses. Placing an ice pack directly on the eyes carries a risk of frostbite, so please place thin medical gauze (or a thin handkerchief if you don't have gauze) between the ice pack and your skin.
  • Applying a warm compress after stitch removal is recommended.

Removal of Stitches / Bandages / Drains

  • The bandage is removed after 3–5 days.
  • From the day the bandage is removed until one week after stitch removal, apply Neosiderm (Fucidin) with a cotton swab 2–3 times a day, using only a small amount so that the wound does not dry out. Applying too much may cause the wound to become macerated.
  • For one day after the bandage is removed, please wear the compression band, and for the following month we recommend wearing it except while sleeping. (Wearing it while sleeping or for long periods can impair circulation and cause more swelling, so please wear it with breaks in between.)
  • The drain is removed after 5 days. Until then, be careful that it does not catch when you dress or while you sleep.
  • Stitches are removed between 10 and 14 days after surgery.

Swelling

  • Swelling varies from person to person.
  • Swelling is at its worst for the first 2 days after surgery and then subsides gradually over 2–4 weeks.
  • On the day of surgery, sit upright as much as possible, avoid bending your head down or lying face down, and sleep with 2-3 pillows propped under you, which helps reduce swelling and pain. Also, do not turn your head to the side or lie on your stomach; it is best to sleep lying flat on your back.

Prescribed Medication

  • Be sure to take the medication prescribed by the clinic after surgery.
  • You may feel dizziness or nausea for 1–2 days after surgery. Take Zofran (the orange tablet provided by the clinic) every 12 hours, letting it dissolve under your tongue.
  • To prevent bleeding, painkillers such as aspirin, vitamins, red ginseng, juices and extracts, omega-3, propolis, and hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives may be taken only one week after all treatment has ended.
  • If pain at the surgical site is severe even after taking the prescribed medication, you may take 1 additional Tylenol tablet (up to 5 tablets per day).

Shampooing

  • At the clinic, we help with shampooing on day 3 or 4 and on day 7 or 10. When you visit for treatment, we will also show you how to shampoo at home.
  • You can shampoo starting 2 days after stitch removal, but for one week take care that shampoo, conditioner, and the like do not come into direct contact with the wound, and dry your hair with cool air.

Face Washing

  • You may wash your face starting 2 days after suture removal.
  • Until the sutures are removed, take care not to let water get into the surgical area.

Exercise

  • Light walks help swelling go down faster.
  • Begin any exercise that makes your face flush — golf, gym workouts, swimming, saunas and jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses), and so on — only after 4 weeks have passed since stitch removal.

Perm / Hair Dye

  • Perms and hair dyeing are possible starting 2 months after surgery.

Care

  • After stitch removal, during daytime activities, apply strip tape along the incision lines and then cover it with skin-tone tape. Apply the strip tape closely spaced for 2 weeks, then sparsely for the following 2 months. (Please apply it as instructed during your treatment visit.) In the evening, after washing your face, remove the strip tape, apply Neosiderm (Fucidin) and scar ointment, and then go to sleep. (Use Neosiderm (Fucidin) for one week after stitch removal; after that, apply scar ointment only.)
  • For about a month after surgery, avoid exaggerated facial expressions, excessive movement of the facial muscles, touching your face with your hands, strong massages such as meridian massage, and hard foods.
  • Sensation may be dulled after surgery. It takes about 3–6 months for the surgical area to settle and for sensation to fully return. This may vary from person to person.
