Full Rhinoplasty Aftercare Instructions
No Alcohol / No Smoking
- Do not drink alcohol or smoke for 2 months after surgery. Alcohol and cigarettes cause inflammation and delay wound healing.
Compresses
- Ice packs are very important from right after surgery through day 7. Apply them around the eyes, and while the splint is on, apply them over the splint.
Swelling
- Swelling varies from person to person.
- Swelling is at its worst for the first 2 days after surgery and then subsides gradually over 2–4 weeks.
- On the day of surgery, sit upright as much as possible, avoid bending your head down or lying face down, and sleep with 2-3 pillows propped under you, which helps reduce swelling and pain. Also, do not turn your head to the side or lie on your stomach; it is best to sleep lying flat on your back.
Prescribed Medication
- Be sure to take the medication prescribed by the clinic after surgery.
- Dip a cotton swab in a small amount of Neosiderm (Fucidin) and apply it 2–3 times a day, just enough to keep the wound from drying out.
- Painkillers such as aspirin, vitamins, red ginseng, herbal extract drinks, omega-3, propolis, and hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives may be taken one week after all treatment is complete.
- If pain at the surgical site is severe even after taking the prescribed medication, you may take 1 additional Tylenol tablet (up to 5 tablets per day).
Bleeding
- For the first 2–3 days after surgery, blood may collect beneath the nose and a runny nose is natural. Gently blot with clean gauze or tissue, pressing lightly so that it soaks in.
Suture Removal
- Never remove the tape on your nose, the splint, or the cotton inside your nose yourself. Please take care that they do not come off until we remove them at the clinic.
- Stitches are removed within 7–14 days, and the tape on the outside of the nose stays on for 7–10 days. If you had alar reduction or philtrum reduction, the stitches are removed after 10–14 days.
- If ear cartilage was used, the stitches behind the ear are removed on day 14.
Glasses
- While the splint is on, you may wear glasses or sunglasses.
- After the splint is removed, you may wear glasses starting one month after the day it was removed. Thick-framed glasses whose frame and nose pads are a single piece may be worn from 2 weeks after splint removal.
Exercise
- Light walks help swelling go down faster.
- Begin any exercise that makes your face flush — golf, gym workouts, swimming, saunas and jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses), and so on — only after 4 weeks have passed since stitch removal.
Face Washing
- You may wash your face starting 2 days after suture removal.
- Until the sutures are removed, take care not to let water get into the surgical area.
Makeup
- Skin makeup is allowed from 2 weeks after suture removal.
Care
- Nose packs may be used starting one month after splint removal.
- Please also avoid, as much as possible, anything that irritates the nose, such as picking or blowing it with your fingers or cotton swabs.
- If you had alar reduction or philtrum reduction, the wound may open even after stitch removal if you make exaggerated expressions, yawn widely, stretch the philtrum, or talk a lot, so please be careful.
